Remote Working Part 1 – Beginners guide (Overview)

Quickbooks online edition

Obviously not everybody is allowed to work remotely as there are some types of work that require us to be at their employers premises or travel to perform their duties in person. But for those of us have the chance to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and offer some practical directions by distributing it online with the sole objective of providing valuable advice for adapting to remote working or managing remote workers.

I can tell you that there are a lot of self proclaimed ‘gurus’ on the Internet who will try and persuade you to purchase videos for vast sums of money, take my word for it you don’t need to do this.

I am fortunate to be able to work anywhere I choose and just about everyone who asks me what I do for a living wants to understand how I manage to work remotely. Don’t get me wrong here I am still learning about the science of remote working as each day I meet persons on the Internet who tell me about new approaches and I am constantly coming across new technologies and approaches that make my life easier and make me more effective.

During the past seven years I have substantially adapted my working practices to enable me to do all of my work remotely with a selection of online tools and unfaltering self management. One afternoon whilst exploring the Internet I unearthed Quickbooks online and this inspired me as to what just might be possible. My encounter with ’hosted’ 'on demand' small business accounting software was a special moment for me and the beginning of my ‘remote working history.

I want to tell you up front that productively working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means imparting to your co-workers, supervisors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will interact with you.

In 'Remote Working Part 2 – Self discipline essentials' I write about how to focus.
